Why Writing Kinky Erotic Romance is an Act of Feminism

The following TED video of Courtney Martin about reinventing feminism made me realize that writing BDSM erotic romance is a feminist act. Okay, maybe the speaker doesn’t touch on this point explicitly, but there’s nothing she says that contradicts the idea.

A meaningful life, she says, is about:

Embracing the paradox
Acting in the face of overwhelm
Loving people well

By her definitions, many people I know are feminists. More than would identify themselves as such. When I write female characters, they are powerful figures. Usually they are Domme’s. But ironically, these strong women who wield their control, both physically and psychologically, are making a statement that they are also vulnerable. The paradox of this position, of strength and vulnerability is part of this life well lived. I’d also argue that BDSM, both sides of the whip, acknowledges and faces the experience of being overwhelmed. And it can also be quite an expression of love. My female characters depend on their submissives to honor their control and power. They take as much risk as their subs. Life is a risky business.
